Introduction

We supported our colleagues at Nexus Planning on their Greater Nottingham Centres Study, which was produced as a supporting evidence document for the Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan Publication Draft consultation.

Our role involved conducting detailed data analytics on Population, Expenditure, Deprivation, and 20-Minute Neighbourhoods, providing essential insights to inform the study.

Challenges

Data integration: Collating and combining various data types (e.g. spatial, demographic, infrastructure data) to develop a comprehensive analysis of the town centres.

Addressing multiple characteristics: Ensuring the analysis covers and assesses all eight key characteristics of the Town and Country Planning Association’s (TCPA) 20-Minute Neighbourhoods Guide (2021).

Solutions

The Greater Nottingham Centres Study employed methodologies, including socio-demographic assessments and 20-minute neighbourhood analyses, to evaluate the health and functionality of various centres.

Based on policy guidance and best practice, we devised our own methodology of assessing how well each centre met the criteria of the 20-minute neighbourhood. Using a combination of desktop-based research and on-site observations, we were able to establish an informed view of the relative strengths and weaknesses of each centre, looking to specific areas such as access to transports, green spaces availability and provision of education facilities.

Results

Our demographic review and 20-minute neighbourhood analysis of each centre helped to identify areas of weakness, and to form policy recommendations which ultimately could support the vitality and viability of the centres.
