Introduction

Ealing Council in London were embarking on the process of writing their New Local Plan. This is one of the key planning documents that will be used to shape development across the borough over the next 15 years. The regulation 18 consultation was the first stage of the process and was the first chance for the people of Ealing to get involved.

Challenges

Ealing wanted to reduce unnecessary administration and digitise their consultation process, gathering key insights to inform decision making. They wanted to understand the priorities of the borough’s residents, workers, visitors and students as well as what they like and dislike about the current state of the area. Previous work had gathered some data but only from certain segments of the local community.

Solutions

The solution was to do more than the council had ever done before, using new techniques to gather data from a broader range of people. Give My View was the solution and it allowed Ealing to reach new community members on their own terms enabling people to engage in the palm of their hand rather than via solely traditional methods.
Give My View was translated and marketed in 9 languages across Ealing to be as inclusive as possible for the borough’s community.

Results

The regulation 18 round of consultation gathered the thoughts of 10,616 Ealing community members. This totalled over 165,000 pieces of data including over 29,600 pieces of qualitative feedback. Additionally, over 5,300 GDPR compliant email addresses were gathered for future project communications and updates from Ealing. This completely blew previous levels of engagement out of the water. Reg 19 consultation followed and Give My View was again used to connect with the community. Ealing’s new Local Plan will be adopted in 2025.

From my perspective it has proved to be invaluable and far exceeded my wildest expectations in terms of metrics and reaching the underserved. It’s a great product and I know you are always looking to improve it. We achieved really impressive results.
