Geographical information systems (GIS) and mapping
Introduction
The Infrastructure Accessibility Index (IAT) highlights areas with ample services and easy pedestrian access to different types of infrastructure. IAT is based on the “15-minute city” concept.
Challenges
London Case: The limited capabilities of the Public Transport Accessibility Level (PTAL) too that guides planning policies in London.
Solutions
The Infrastructure Accessibility Tool is designed to assess the adequacy and convenience of infrastructure across three key transportation modes: public transport, pedestrian pathways, and road access for cars. It provides a more detailed and nuanced evaluation than Public Transport Accessibility Level (PTAL), enabling better-informed planning decisions and policy formulation at the local level.
Results
The Infrastructure Accessibility Tool (IAT) mapping app uses live data on social and engineering (where available) infrastructure to inform land use and density decisions. It assesses the availability of key services within a 15-minute radius via walking, car, or public transport. It provides planners with more precise metrics evaluating infrastructure accessibility, helping to prioritise development in areas with higher accessibility and better environmental conditions, in line with the London Plan objectives.
