Introduction

The National Underground Asset Register (NUAR) is a UK government initiative to create a comprehensive digital map of underground pipes and cables. Managed by the Geospatial Commission, NUAR aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of installing, maintaining, and repairing buried infrastructure. It provides secure, instant access to data from over 600 public and private sector asset owners, including utilities and local authorities. This reduces the time and cost associated with obtaining asset information, minimizes accidental strikes on underground assets, and supports better planning and execution of infrastructure projects.

Challenges

The National Underground Asset Register (NUAR) addressed several significant challenges. Previously, obtaining underground asset data was inefficient, requiring workers to contact multiple asset owners and wait over six days on average. This process led to around 60,000 annual accidental strikes on underground infrastructure, causing injuries, delays, and high costs. NUAR provides a unified, secure digital map, improving data accessibility and minimizing project delays. It enhances safety for workers and the public by reducing the risk of accidental strikes. Additionally, NUAR supports better planning and execution of infrastructure projects, contributing to economic growth and reduced disruptions.

Solutions

AtkinsRealis and its partners (Ordnance Survey and 1Spatial) developed a bespoke cloud based solution using open source technology and open standards.

Results

The Ordnance Survey have been appointed as the future operator of NUAR. This transition will see NUAR move to a public beta service by spring 2025.

We are delighted with the news that the MVP is now expanding across the country sooner than planned, marking a significant step towards a smarter and more resilient future
